| Bhairav
Kund, deep in the Himalaya, almost on the Tibetan border is one
of the sacred pilgrimage sites for Shamans.
Both Hindus and Bhuddhist devotees visit this high-elevation
holy mountain lake to pay their homage and take bath during every
Bhadra (August) Full Moon. The views of the high Himalaya are spectacular.
Walk through fascinating villages and visit a famous nunnery.
Where are you going?
Day 1: Arrive at The Borderland Resort from either
Kathmandu or the Nepal-Tibet border. Relax in hammocks listening
to the sounds of the river rushing by. Sprawling terraces in the
sun provide you with the perfect surroundings to unwind and shake
your Kathmandu blues or the rigors of your overland journey.
Day 2: After brunch at The Borderland Riverside
Resort, your trek starts with a 25-minute bus ride to the Larcha
suspension bridge. From here the trail winds through a number of
small interesting Buddhist villages, past chortens and Sherpa houses.
This historic trail was once the old trade route between Nepal and
Tibet. The Dugunagadi Fortress is a maze of crumbling walls strategically
situated on a plateau. The views are stunning; during the day one
gazes at Tibetan snowcapped peaks and by night, the lights of ZhangMu,
the first Tibetan town north of the Friendship Bridge, glisten throughout
the dark evening sky. We will spend our first night under the stars
here.
Day 3: From the fortress, follow the path through
the gateway, adorned with religious paintings and a colorful mandala
on the roof. The trail ascends to the ‘way of the dead’,
a route used to carry bodies to the religious funeral ceremony.
The path slowly begins to move into dense, lush forest. Along the
route you will pass Tasitham, a quaint village adorned with fluttering
prayer flags. The campsite is located on a ridge, overlooking the
“white lakes”; rows of mountains, each divided by waves
of clouds, creates a series of beautiful white lakes.
Day 4: The path slowly begins to change into dense
lush forests cloaked with old twisted tree-trunks that are draped
in moss and surrounded by numerous species of ferns and other assorted
flora. In the spring, rhododendrons are in full bloom and dots of
red and white come alive across the countryside. Upon reaching your
campsite, the views of the Tibetan Himalayan range are breathtaking.
Day 5: It is a short hike through a rhododendron
forest, before the trail gradually climbs past the tree line and
contours around the sides of the mountains up to Bhairav Kund, one
of the most sacred pilgrimage sites for Shamans. Every August during
the full moon devotees make their way to this high elevation holy
mountain lake to worship and bathe. From the pass the views of the
Himalayas are up-close and spectacular; at 6966m Dorje Lakpa resembles
an inverted shark tooth looming in the distance. We pitch camp beside
the lake and nearby gompa.
Day 6: In the morning, take a half-hour walk up
the hill, just above the lake for amazing views of the Langtang
range to the west, and the Tibetan Himalayan range to the east.
Walk above the tree line through to a rocky alpine environment.
For about an hour you will pass numerous mani walls which are stone
partitions that are carved with Tibetan Buddhist prayers. This area
exudes an unspoken peace and calms. As the path begins to drop,
the forests come alive with exotic flora and fauna indigenous to
the Himalayan region. After a few hours walking in this untouched
area there is a steep descent down the ridge towards the village
of Chagam.
Day 7: One of the highlights of the trek is an
ani gompa (woman’s monastery). In the morning we will visit
this renowned nunnery housing 300 nuns. Some travel as far away
as Lhadakh in order to study and meditate here. The layout of the
village is unusual in that each nun has her own house, thus creating
a colorful spattering of red, yellow, green and white homes throughout
the beautiful countryside. Much of the day’s walk is along
carefully sculpted steep terraces with wide-open views of the valley.
Day 8: After Listi it is a long steep descent back
to The Borderland. Along the route you will pass houses that cling
to the sides of the mountains and terraces with sheer drops. On
the final approach to the Bhote Kosi there are outstanding views
of the valley. Upon reaching the river, we will cross a small bridge
over the Kaule Khola, our premiere adventure canyon. You will return
to Borderland Riverside Resort in the afternoon, a perfect time
to unwind, have a drink and relax in a hammock after your long trek.
Day 9: After lunch at Borderlands drive to Kathmandu.
